Content

 Domestic scene of a woman reading from around 1800. At the beginning of the 19th century, the Netherlands were among the most literate countries in Europe. On average, 60 percent of brides and 75 percent of bridegrooms signed their marriage certificates which is an indication of an ability to read and write.
