Content

Up until the seventeenth century, the books in Dutch town and university libraries were usually fastened to the desks by chains. The university library of Franeker was refurbished in 1684 to become a reading room library and the chains disappeared. The books are placed in large cupboards placed against the wall which are separated from the reading room by a railing. Visitors were not allowed to get the books themselves but were given them by a servant. Reading was still done standing.
