Content

Dora and Elisabeth, two of the six Arntzenius children, recorded for posterity by Willem B. Tholen (1860-1931)while reading. In the paintings of the impressionists, and in their wake also by the painters of the Haagse School, informally reading women were a favourite subject. Tholen was born in Amsterdam but established himself as an artist in The Hague. The family Arntzenius lived with him and his wife. The portraits which Tholen made of the children are among his best-known works.
