Content

In 1900 the ANTB, the Algemene Nederlandse Typografenbond, organised a strike in Amsterdam. One of the reasons was the rise of the typesetting machine which formed a threat to the hand compositors. They wanted to force through a sharp rise in wages before it was too late and the typesetting machine would have taken over the work of the hand compositor. In addition, printers, bookbinders, machine compositors and lithographers demanded a wage increase. The strike was a failure and had as consequence that various groups within the ANTB split off into separate organisations.
