After the abolition of the newspaper stamp in 1869, the number of newspapers and magazines rose quickly. The increasing education and prosperity of the population also brought about an increase in the number of people who read newspapers and magazines. Some newspapers, such as the "Nieuwe Rotterdamsche Courant", "De Amsterdammer", and the "Algemeen Handelsblad" even appeared twice a day. They were not only available by subscription, but also for sale in, for instance, bookstalls as can be seen in this illustration.
