The father of this family from Zaandam reads the "Haarlemmer Courant". In the first half of the 19th century, a fairly large number of newspapers and magazines were published that appeared once or more than once a week. Besides reading a newspaper for oneself, reading the news to others in public places such as cafés, societies and squares was also common practice up to the second half of the 19th century.
