Content

 The cultural focus on France in the eighteenth century not only caused a strong growth in French books but also in translations from the French as here of Voltaire's "L'enfant prodigue". A simple octavo format was the standard form for these publications. The illustration of the beehive on this title page is the is the vignette of the Amsterdam Theatre and indicates that this play had been performed there.
