Content

As seventeenth-century title pages usually contained much information, a lot of use was made in the typographical design of varying types of letters (capitals and lower case), type sizes and letter types (Gothic, roman, italic). The printer's device, originally a device against piracy, has a decidedly emblematic, often religious, character. In this device of the Haarlem printer Adriaen Roman there is a direct reference to his house address.
