Content

From the second half of the 19th century, the religious and moralistic aspect of learning to read disapeared more and more into the background. This had also consequences for teaching as a school subkect. The spelling method in reading lessons was replaced by a phonetic method and more varied books that were attractive for children were published. Being able to read was no longer an aim in itself but a condition for being able to take on other subjects and for climbing the social ladder.
