Booksellers selling only books were, also in the 19th century, exceptions. Most 'retailers' had a 'mixed business' and sold other products and services as well. This could vary from serving as an advertisement address for personnel, the renting of houses and the sale of pills and ointments to the sale of stationery and, as here, educational requirements.
