Content

Contrary to boys, girls were kept much more strictly in books. Their lives were passed primarily within the family where they were supposed to make themselves useful. Some girls did rebel as in the book "Was ik maar een jongen" (If only I were a boy), bottom right. But this heroine too conformed to contemporary morals: she finally found a fiancé and left her job.
