Content

Cartoon on the appearance of "De Nieuwe Gids" in October 1885. According to the editors this was to be an innovative magazine in every respect. There was, however, no sign of this urge to modernise in the first number. In the picture the old "Gids" is paraphrasing Van Alphen's 'Welkomsgroet van Klaartje voor haar kleine zusje'. The new "Gids" replied with a saying from Corneille's "Le Cid". That an old sleepy head appeared in the cradle instead of a baby was due to a mistake by the artist.
