Content

 The scholar Johannes Immerzeel junior, author of the standard work 'De levens en werken der Hollandsche en Vlaamsche kunstschilders, beeldhouwers, graveurs en bouwmeesters (etc.)', in his dressing gown. Immerzeel, retired to his study, with books within reach on a table and behind him a well-filled bookcase, is the prototype of the 19th-century solitary reader.
