 A fragment from the Dutch translation of the 'Descrittione di tutti i Paesi Bassi, altrimenti detti Germania Inferiore', originally published in 1567. The remark by Guicciardini is as follows: 'De ghemeyne lieden hebben meestendeels wat beginsels in Grammatica: ende konnen schier al t'samen, jae oock de boeren ende landtlieden, ten aller minsten lesen ende schryven.' (Ordinary people ususally know a few basics of grammar and can all, yes, also farmers and peasants, at least read and write).
