Content

In 1542 the 'Wonderboeck' by David Joris was published in Deventer, printed by Dirck van den Borne II. It is a representation of the spiritualistic and prophetic views of the Anabaptist David Joris, who considered himself to be the new prophet and Messiah. The printer was jailed for seven months and was not allowed to practise his trade for fourteen months. The editor of the book, Jorien Ketel, was executed and beheaded. The book was nevertheless reprinted several times. The text is set in a bastarda, a little used typeface in the Northern Netherlands, and contains three woodcuts after design by the author himself.
