Content

This printer's device of one of the most important printers in Deventer, Jacob van Breda, was used by more printers in the Netherlands. It dates back to a printer's device of Pieter de Keysere from Ghent, copied after that of Jodocus Badius of Paris. It gives a nice idea of the operations in a 16th-century printing house: to the left the printer pulls at the lever of his press, behind him his assistant is busy with the ink balls to ink the composition, and to the right the compositor is seated before his case with the composing stick in his hand.
