"De Hollandsche Spectator" was founded by Justus van Effen in 1731, according to the first issue modelled on the English Spectator, 'which I have determined not to translate in my native tongue, but to imitate'. It was not long-lived: the last number appeared in 1735 but this popularising periodical, aiming at moral and social education, had a great number of followers.
