Content

 The market for theological and devotional books constituted by far the largest segment of the book trade in the 17th century. Scholars, such as the Haarlem clergyman Adrianus Tetrodius, liked to be portrayed with their books. As was usual in the first half of the 17th century books were placed with the edges, clasps and ribbons to the front.
