Binding of gold-tooled brown-carmine shagreen. Up to the 1920s there was a relative blossoming of hand-book-bindings in the Netherlands. Dirk Nicolaas Esveld (1877-1960) worked anonymously at the firm of Elias P, van Bommel in Amsterdam, but in his spare time he made these kinds of bindings inspired by the English Arts and Crafts movement, at home on the living-room table.
