Content

This "Breviarium Trajectense" was printed by the Collacie-brethren, who had founded a printing house in Gouda around 1494 to replace their scriptorium where they had been working as illuminators and bookbinders. Breviaries were often printed in a small format, so that they could easily be carried, but this copy is clearly meant for those who stayed at home. The architectonic frame of the woodcut and the decorations around the text on the other page (columns, candelabra, acanthus-leaf motifs) are Italian-inspired.
