Content

This illustration is by the poet, painter and printmaker Adriaen van de Venne, for a long time the regular illustrator of the famous poet from Middelburg, Jacob Cats. This "Spiegel van den ouden ende nieuwen tyt" (Mirror of the old and the new time) is an extensive collection of emblematical proverbs with 137 illustrations, arranged by age groups: first the young people with subjects such as education and making love, then the middle-aged with social and homely affairs, and finally the people of riper and old age. The book was read far into the 19th century - but then no longer in this de luxe edition.
