Content

This well-known emblem book, "Sinnepoppen" (emblems) of the successful corn merchant and ship's underwriter Roemer Visscher contains 183 illustrations by Claes Jansz Visscher with representations of animals, plants, utensils and people. Emblem books have, on the whole, three elements on every page: a picture, a maxim and an explanation, usually in rhyme. Roemer Visscher here recommends the book with its wisdom and useful lessons as a medicinal herb against the uncultured behaviour and ignorance of humanity. The books are, as was usual till the beginning of the 17th century, represented here with the edges and clasps forward.
