Content

In the 17th century, publishers often used old print material for their illustrated books. The Amsterdam printer D.P. Pers, for instance, managed to secure the plates with which "De warachtighe fabulen der dieren", a well-known emblem book with animal fables by the Bruges rhetorician Eduard de Dene , had been printed in Antwerp in 1567. The illustrations were by the famous artist Marcus Gheeraerts the Elder, also from Bruges. Pers commissioned Vondel to write new poems, adapted the title a little and provided his edition with the illustrations by Gheeraerts. In 1682, the Amsterdam printer S. Wybrands published this reprint, printed from the same touched-up copperplates which were by then 115 years old.
