Content

A hand compositor (here at work at the 'N.V. Boekhandel en Drukkerij', formerly E.J. Brill, in Leiden) forms a line composition by placing lead letters (in this case capitals) in a composing stick. The composing stick, which could be used for any measure desired, was held in the left hand. With his thumb the compositor held the composition of movable lead letter blocks in place.
