Content

 Example of an illustration in a block book. In the xylographic printing technique both the illustrations and the text are cut in wooden blocks. Characteristic of this type of publication are the monumental woodcuts with a strong linear character, clear outlines and limited hatching. More than 120 copies or fragments, belonging to different editions or states, are known of the Biblia Pauperum, or Bible of the Poor. They are not bibles in the strictest sense of the word, but cohesive stories relating to the Old and New Testament.
