Content

The "Zeevsche nachtegael" , a collection of poems by well-known poets from Zeeland, including Jacob Cats was published in Middelburg in 1623 with illustrations by Adriaen van de Venne. The "Zeevsche nachtegael" was published by Van de Venne's brother Jan, who had a well-known printing house annexe 'Schildery-winckel' (painting shop), where the cultural elite of Middelburg liked to sojourn. The title page of this book is typically 17th-century: a lot of text in different typefaces (roman and italic, in upper and lower case) and type sizes and, at the bottom, a (in this case fairly large) printer's device.
