Content

 This sort of sample book was used in the 17th and 18th centuries when learning to write letters, petitions, and other legal and financial documents. It goes back to a publication from 1696 in Zwolle. The picture shows a class of pupils with the teacher in a high armchair and with a birch rod, together with the ferule, the usual instrument for punishing obstinate pupils.
