Until 1663 the printers and booksellers in Amsterdam fell under the The guild of St Luke, the guild of painters, engravers and draughtsmen. Because of the increasing importance of the branch the book profession was granted permission by the city council to form a guild of its own. This notarial document contains the 'ordinances and discretions' of the guild of St Luke's before the secession.
