The first 'week of the book' took place from 7 to 14 May 1932. It was an initiative of the Stichting Collectieve Propaganda van het Nederlandse Boek (CPNB) (Foundation for the Promotion of the Dutch Book). Together with the week of the book the 'week of the book present' was also introduced, called 'Geschenk' (Present). The week of the book and the present were to remain the major activities of the CPNB. The week of the book was organised regularly around a certain theme, but this was not the case in 1939.
