Content

This illustration comes from 'Prenten-magazijn voor de jeugd', a periodical devoted to edifying matters and stories. It was included in an explanation of the invention of the art of printing. Just like making turf, gutting herring, the telegraph, the telescope, the land yacht, the thermometer, the microscope and the pendulum for a clock, its invention was claimed as being Dutch. The illustration shows a 19th-century printing house in operation: two printers are standing beside an iron hand press of the Stanhope type and, on the right, compositors are busy at the type case. Printed sheets are hanging up to dry. In addition to the subjects this periodical also followed the format and typography of the 1834 'Hollandsch penning-magazijn voor de jeugd': almost square in shape with very simple wood engravings.
