Content

According to the 1926 Sijthoff commemorative book 'there is here a pleasant stillness because there is no mechanical power in this room'. A group of compositors was assigned to each type of composition. The compositors work on a 'rack': the device in which the type cases are stored. Each 'rack' has two cases: an upper and a lower case. Only the capital letters in the upper case are in alphabetical order. The small letters in the lower case lie in such a way that the letters which are most used are the easiest to pick. Also in the cases are a number of numerals, accented letters, punctuation marks, spaces and separation marks.
