Content
In the first quarter of the twentieth century, A.W. Sijthoff in Leiden marketed at its own expense and risk a number of expensive de luxe editions, in particular the 'Breviarium Grimani' and the 'Codices Graeci et Latini': facsimiles of miniatures and codices made with great precision and provided with introductions and explanatory text by various scholars. A decoration from King Oscar of Sweden, the gold medal for art and science from the Emperor of Austria and a letter from Pope Leo XII attest to the great satisfaction with which the 'Codices' were received internationally. The 'Breviarium Grimani', appearing in three languages, was also purchased in the Netherlands by 'a pleasing number of private persons and libraries'.
