By-laws and regulations for book traders, printers, bookbinders, etc. were imposed by the magistrate and these could vary per town and per guild but they had to be strictly followed. As everywhere, one of the major decrees in Leiden was that "no one in the city may take on the trade of bookseller, printer, plate printer or bookbinder unless he is a citizen or burger of this town." Also laid down were the conditions to be met in order to become a member of the guild, provisions with respect to the acceptance of apprentices or 'servants', the provisions for becoming a 'free master', the sale of books, etc.
