Content

This illustration from a booklet for children on national crafts shows a bookseller behind the counter in his shop. On the adjoining page there is an explanation of how a bookseller operated at this time: he did not buy ready-made books as is the case nowadays, but manuscripts which he had printed 'if he judged it to be in his interest'. If a book sold well or was quickly sold out then he often had it reprinted, 'as it was thought necessary".
