The rise of the children's book began to take on stormy proportions as the 18th century advanced. Especially Hiëronymus van Alphen, who filled a need with his exhortations in rhyme, became very popular. On p. 29 of this booklet is the story `The plum tree', with its first line `Llittle John saw once plums hanging'. In the preface Van Alphen mentions that he did not expect to earn much fame from this kind of poem.
